Demonstrating a Professional Body of KNowledge

The Renaissance Chapter 3 Unit Plan

I consistently apply effective planning, instructional and assessment strategies to meet the learning needs of my students. Despite my discipline being English Language Arts, I fully embraced teaching a Social Studies unit and succeeded in addressing the learning outcomes and goals outlined in provincial legislation and programs of study. My unit provides compelling evidence of effective short, medium and long-range planning and the research I did in my English degree touched heavily on this time period and subject area, thus I was able to demonstrate my specialized knowledge of the subject areas I taught. Throughout this unit I capably generated evidence of student learning to inform teaching practice through a balance of formative and summative assessment experiences. For example, students were highly engaged in the mapping assignment which allowed them to apply what they had learned from their textbooks. I also designed the final summative assessment for the unit.

Teaching Across Borders Visual Reflection

I have had the opportunity to challenge myself and increasingly consider relevant local, provincial, national and international contexts and issues. For example, I considered the impact of various contexts in my teaching when I travelled to Madrid, Spain as part of the Teaching Across Borders program with the University of Calgary. This was a rich opportunity to consider intercultural curriculums and form relationships.
